The Huel Energy+ Formula Explained

Huel Energy+ is a refreshing, caffeinated, vitamin and mineral rich, functional sparkling drink in a 355ml can. Energy+ is a good source of fiber with 4g per can, contains 27 vitamins and minerals, and is made with real fruit juice with just 35 calories per can.

Like all Huel products, Huel Energy+  contains no GMO or animal-derived ingredients and is suitable for vegans. Huel Energy+ uses the US, USDA's Dietary Guidelines and Daily Value (DV) to guide the inclusion of key micronutrients [1,24]. It’s a delicious way to give your body a boost of essential vitamins and minerals.

The Current Market

Many fizzy caffeinated drinks on the market are high in sugar and provide little or no nutritional value. We wanted to create a drink that not only tastes great but provides 27 key vitamins and minerals and minimal amounts of sugar. Our comprehensive micronutrient profile that has been formulated by our in-house nutrition experts. Huel Energy+ is lower in macronutrients and, consequently, lower in calories than other Huel products as it’s a vitamin and mineral sparkling drink that can be enjoyed at any time without contributing significantly to your calorie intake.

Caffeine

A can of Huel Energy+ contains 200mg of caffeine, which is roughly the same as two 8 oz cups of drip coffee [2]. Caffeine is a compound that many of us love, but many of us consume too much. At Huel we listen to science. The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has stated that 400mg of caffeine per day [2] is a safe amount.

Vitamins

Huel Energy+  contains all 13 essential vitamins as part of a unique vitamin and mineral formula to provide, in some cases, more than 100% of the recommended daily amounts. This is because numerous studies have demonstrated that, for many micronutrients, levels higher than the DVs may be beneficial for health.

For example, it’s widely considered that the amount of vitamin C we’re recommended to consume is too low [3-5], so each can of Huel Energy+ contains a high inclusion (100% RI) from both acerola cherries and ascorbic acid. The benefits of consuming more vitamin C include supporting a healthy immune system, antioxidant properties, and supporting the absorption of some minerals like iron[6-8].

Other examples of what each can of Huel Energy+ contains are as follows:

  • 100% of the DV for vitamin C to support normal collagen formulation [9-11]

  • 100% of the DV for vitamins D2 + D3 supporting the function of immune cells [12]

  • 167% of the DV for biotin (vitamin B7) which supports healthy skin [13]

  • 120% of the DV for pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) which helps support metabolic functions [14-15]

  • 100% of the DV for niacin (vitamin B3) which supports the body’s energy-generating processes [16-17]

Minerals

Huel Energy+ also contains essential minerals. For example, each can contains:

  • 100% of the DV for selenium which is known to provide antioxidant support [18].

  • 100% of the DV for iodine which plays a critical role in healthy metabolic activity [19].

  • 20% of the DV for magnesium which supports efficient energy production[20]

Huel Energy+ also contains 1039mg of electrolytes including potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus which are crucial for regulating nerve and muscle function, as well as maintaining the body’s fluid balance [21-22].

Fiber

Huel Energy+ contains 4g fiber per can. The source is chicory, a type of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber forms a gel-like substance in the gut that helps to slow digestion which can assist with controlling blood glucose levels. Soluble fiber can also control cholesterol levels, as well as provide “food” for the beneficial microorganisms that reside in our gut to ferment[23].
